Hugh Halter

Hugh Halter is an author, speaker, coach, and storyteller who has spent four decades helping people live the missionary life of Jesus. His work has taken him from Portland to Denver, Alton, and now Cascade, Idaho, where he is developing a retreat center. Books including The Tangible Kingdom and Brave Cities tell parts of that journey. Behind it all is the life of his son Ryan, whose struggle with severe epilepsy deeply shaped Hugh’s understanding of suffering, calling, and purpose.

Read Hugh’s full story

Hugh hails from Portland, Oregon, and spent his college years in the Seattle Tacoma area. After a ten year call to youth ministry through Youth For Christ, Hugh planted his first church in Portland and then moved to Denver to plant a missionary movement called Adullam.

That story was chronicled in The Tangible Kingdom. From this 15-year journey, Hugh traveled around the world teaching the church, in all forms, to live the missionary life of Jesus. He continued to write and create practical resources and has sold over a million copies of his 10 books.

Hugh’s third city was the small town of Alton, Illinois, where he pioneered and curated a kingdom ecosystem made up of benevolent businesses, justice works, and a network of intentional missionary homes. This story was chronicled in Brave Cities. Hugh now co-directs Brave Cities, helping kingdom entrepreneurs around the world.

The backstory of this 40 year journey has been the constant suffering of his son Ryan, who had a lifelong battle with severe epilepsy. Ryan passed in 2020 at age 33, but his life and struggle were the primary force in Hugh’s understanding of the call of God and the purpose of every life for every man.

Hugh has been a prominent national and international voice, speaker, coach, friend, and storyteller, not of concepts, but of real life. Hugh is still “in it,” and his passion is to see men live free, fast, and grow deep and wide.

In 2026, at age 60, Hugh moved to Cascade, Idaho, to begin developing a retreat center. A lifelong elk hunter, fly fisherman, avid golfer, and grandfather, Hugh is committed to give his last 25 year run to men. We hope that might be you.

Cheryl

Hugh’s wife Cheryl has been his co-adventurer and team leader for the Halters’ journeys around the world. Her love for horses, grandkids, and anyone who needs a spot at the table has been the reason the story has worked.

Why Journeymen Society?

We are building practical formation for men who want to grow deep in Jesus and carry that life into the places and people entrusted to them.

Formation for ordinary life

Journeymen is centered on following Jesus through family, work, suffering, friendship, and calling. The aim is teaching men can practice and pass along.

Men bringing men together

We want to equip men to gather friends, ask honest questions, and build local groups with purpose.

A wide invitation

The Society is for men who are all in, men returning to faith, and men who are not yet convinced but are willing to explore the way of Jesus.
